Indiana winters are unpredictable — a 55°F day in January followed by a hard freeze the next night, then six inches of snow, then rain. That cycle of temperature swings is exactly what causes the most common types of winter roof damage in the Evansville area.
The good news: most winter roof damage is preventable with the right preparation. Here is what to watch for and what to do about it.
Ice Dams: The Most Common Winter Roof Problem in Indiana
An ice dam forms when heat escaping from your living space warms the roof deck, melting snow near the ridge. That meltwater runs down toward the eaves, where the roof is colder (over the unheated overhang), and refreezes. As the cycle repeats, a ridge of ice builds up at the eave edge.
Water backs up behind the ice dam and has nowhere to go — so it seeps under shingles, through the underlayment, and into your attic and ceiling.
Signs of an ice dam:
- Icicles hanging from the eaves (especially large, thick ones)
- Ice buildup along the roof edge
- Water stains on interior ceilings or walls near exterior walls
- Wet insulation in the attic
What causes ice dams: The root cause is almost always inadequate attic insulation and ventilation. When your attic is too warm, the roof deck warms unevenly. The fix is not removing ice dams after they form — it is addressing the attic conditions that cause them.
Prevention:
- Ensure attic insulation meets current Indiana code (R-49 to R-60 for most Evansville homes)
- Verify balanced attic ventilation — soffit intake vents plus ridge or gable exhaust vents
- Consider adding an ice and water shield membrane along the first 3–6 feet of the roof edge during your next replacement
If you already have an ice dam: Do not attempt to remove it with a hammer, ice pick, or pressure washer — you will damage the shingles. Most residential roofs in Indiana are engineered for 20–25 pounds per square foot of snow load, which corresponds to roughly 12–15 inches of wet snow or 3–4 feet of dry powder. A typical Evansville winter does not approach these limits.

Winter wind damage should be addressed promptly — a missing shingle in January with months of winter remaining will allow water infiltration with every subsequent rain or snow event.
Condensation and Attic Moisture
In winter, warm moist air from your living space rises into the attic. If the attic is not properly ventilated, this moisture condenses on the cold roof deck and rafters. Over time, condensation causes:
- Wood rot in rafters and sheathing
- Mold and mildew growth
- Degraded insulation (wet insulation loses its R-value)
- Premature shingle failure from below
Prevention: Proper attic ventilation is the solution. The standard is 1 square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic floor space, split evenly between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or gable). Many older Evansville homes are under-ventilated.
